The Selekcjoner, Czesław Michniewicz, was in attendance last night at a fairly lifeless 1-0 victory for Legia Warszawa over Radomiak Radom, with Rafał Augustyniak scoring a low drive from the edge of the box.
Michniewicz has been speaking for some time now about calling up Bartosz Kapustka for the Polish national team. Kapustka made his last appearances for the national team in 2016, when he was only 19. His great performances in Euro 2016 had earned him a move to Leicester City, where he didn’t get very much playing time, and his career has kind of regressed from there.
He moved back to the Ekstraklasa in 2020 with Legia, and whilst he’s played to a decent standard for them, he’s never hit the heights of his early career promise. That was again true of last night, as despite a shot from distance that tested the goalkeeper and some neat passes, his touch was wayward, he got booked, and was substituted after 66 minutes.
However, it wasn’t just Kapustka that Michniewicz was there to see. Polsat Sport reported last week that the coach was considering recalling Artur Jędrzejczyk, who last played for Poland in 2018. The 34 year-old defender has 40 appearances for the national team, and would provide a wealth of experience.
Another consideration for Michniewicz is the goalkeeping department. With Szczęsny suffering an ankle injury earlier in the week, although nowhere near as serious as it looked, and Kamil Grabara still recovering from facial fractures, young Legia keeper Kacper Tobiasz has been seriously impressive for his side so far this season. The 19 year-old from Płock is rumoured to be in Michniewicz’s thoughts ahead of the Nations League games this month.
Then there’s the goalscorer, Rafał Augustyniak. He only has one appearance for Poland, coming on as a substitute last year against England, but given the problems with injury that the Polish national midfield is facing he has as good a chance as any of being in the reckoning for the next squad.
The squad for the Nations League games should be revealed sometime this week, probably on or around the 8th (Thursday) given that Holland have already announced theirs. Some of the choices are obvious, and some a little less so. Whoever is chosen, there will be full analysis of the squad in a post on here.
