Last night, towards the end of the first half of Juventus’ 2-0 win against Spezia, Wojciech Szczęsny landed heavily on his right ankle after claiming a cross. He was stretchered off the field, and underwent examinations within the next few hours.
The good news is that the club report Szczęsny has not fractured his ankle or torn any ligaments, and whilst no timescale has been put on his return, an estimate of around six weeks seems reasonable given that the injury he has suffered is most likely pulled ligaments in the ankle. Juventus are not believed to be searching for an emergency back-up as things stand, preferring Mattia Perin who replaced him last night.
Whilst this estimated length of absence means Szczęsny’s World Cup place is probably not in doubt, it will certainly keep him out of the upcoming Nations League games against Holland and Wales. With Kamil Grabara suffering fractures to his face last month, the most likely goalkeepers we will see in these matches are Łukasz Skorupski and Bartłomiej Drągowski. This will be good experience for two decent goalkeepers, particularly Skorupski who has been a very solid goalkeeper for Bologna for the past four years, his performances having been particularly strong last season.
Szczęsny will most likely make his return to action in mid-October if the pulled ligament synopsis is correct, which will give him a few weeks to get back up to speed before the season breaks for the World Cup.
