Skóraś shines as Lech beat Villarreal 3-0 to advance to the Conference League knockout rounds

Michał Skóraś scored twice as Lech Poznań triumphed at home to a rotated Villarreal side to finish second in their Europa Conference League group.

It was a tight first half at Bułgarska, with the visitors getting the best early chance as Morales spurned a chance from the edge of the six-yard box. Lech’s first goal arrived on the counter, as Mikael Ishak lifted a ball over to Filip Marchwinski at the back post, who duly nodded down back towards the far corner. Villarreal defender Mandi kept it out, but only into the path of Kristoffer Velde to smash the ball into the net.

Skóraś was lively down the left, often drawing cynical fouls from Villarreal right back Adrian De la Fuente. The 22 year-old winger got his rewards in the second half, as he capped off a wonderful team move with a finish into the roof of the net before scoring another tap-in 25 minutes later.

Lech were facing a heavily rotated Villarreal side, but you can only beat what’s in front of you and the Polish champions did so in convincing fashion, particularly their second half performance. It was also another great performance for Skóraś, who was keen to downplay rumours of a foreign transfer when he signed his new contract less than two months ago. As I wrote then, he is prime for a move away from Poland and will surely command a decent fee given how well he is performing both domestically and in Europe.

It’s also worth mentioning Skóraś is well in with a shout of making Czesław Michniewicz’s 26-man squad for the World Cup, announced this coming Thursday. Given he was called up to the last Nations League fixtures, I’d say he was the Ekstraklasa player most likely to be included, save the overtures Michniewicz has been making in the direction of Artur Jędrzejczyk.

Furthermore, Skóraś has been nominated for Conference League player of the week, and whilst unlikely he’ll win it’s another indication he and Lech are moving in the right direction.
