Feyenoord fans have voted 23 year-old Polish midfielder Sebastian Szymański as their player of the month for August.
Szymański, who joined from Dynamo Moscow in the summer on a loan-to-buy agreement, scored one goal and registered two assists in his first month with the Dutch club. His great form continued when he registered an assist and scored a rocket (see below) in a game earlier this month against Go Ahead Eagles.
He did unfortunately suffer a hamstring injury during Feyenoord’s first Europa League game against Lazio, and has subsequently missed their last two matches. He has been selected in the Poland squad for the Nations League matches, although it is doubtful if he will play given the nature of this injury.
I’ve written previously about Szymański, as it looked very likely at one point this summer he would be joining Hertha Berlin, but it has been speculated in recent weeks that this move broke down due to difficulty transferring a loan fee because of sanctions on Russian banks. Feyenoord found a way to do this, and have got themselves a star player at a slightly discounted price.
Whether he comes back from this hamstring issue and remains the same impactful player he has been already in his short time with Feyenoord we will find out in due course, but his early-season form is giving Poland another great option in midfield, an area they have been struggling with due to injury.
