Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi gave an update on Jakub Moder when speaking ahead of the Seagulls’ game against Leeds on Saturday.
Interviewed by club media, De Zerbi said: “Yesterday I spoke with him, and he feels better. I don’t know if he is able to play again this season, but he is improving. On Thursday he was on the pitch and I watched him play with the ball with the physical coaches.”
It’s been well-documented that Moder has been out since last April with a complicated ACL injury which has required multiple surgeries, and ruled the 23 year-old midfielder out of last year’s World Cup.
Moder is yet to make an appearance for Brighton this season, despite returning to the training pitch shortly before Christmas. If he does not play prior to the end of May, this would mean Moder will have been out for around 16 months, assuming he makes an appearance during Brighton’s 2023-24 pre-season.
The good news is that De Zerbi intimated that there have been no further major complications, although clearly the last estimate that Moder would be able to return to action in February has not come to pass.
It’s unfortunate for Poland that Moder won’t be able to take part in at least the first two, possibly three games of Fernando Santos’ tenure, against Czechia and Albania later this month and Moldova in June.
Hopefully Moder will be able to pick up where he left off, but you imagine that not playing competitively for over a year means that it will take some time for him to get back up to speed, whether that is this season or the next.
