Milik’s half-hour against Empoli: The good and the bad

Juventus recorded a mildly surprising 4-0 win last night at home to Empoli. Goals from Moise Kean and Weston McKennie were added to by a brace from Adrien Rabiot late on. The result will come as welcome relief to Juve, who were under some pressure despite their 1-0 derby win away at Torino in their last Serie A match.

At the hour mark, Arek Milik was introduced for Dusan Vlahovic. His starting on the bench came as no suprise; Juventus have a big came in the Champions League against Benfica and Milik is the preferred option to lead the line alongside Vlahovic.

Milik had a few good touches and got himself into good positions, however he was equally as guilty of making the wrong decisions and missing some of his chances. Milik’s misses were equal parts down to him and the heroics of Empoli keeper Guglielmo Vicario, although the glaring miss of the evening was entirely down to Milik as he headed wide rom just a few yards out.

Painful as it was to see Milik miss chances like this, I imagine he will still start on Tuesday in Lisbon, as I don’t think Kean has jumped him in the pecking order yet. Kean played well against Empoli, yes, but Milik has played well for Juve more consistently so far this season.

Countryman Wojciech Szczęsny had little to do in goal for Juventus, save for a couple of chances you would’ve expected him to stop.
