Polish international and Brighton loanee Michał Karbownik has been voted Player of the Autumn by Fortuna Düsseldorf fans in an online vote.
He was presented with the award shortly before the winter break, and his victory was announced yesterday on Fortuna’s website and social media pages. The 21 year-old wing-back beaten competition from six of his teammates to win the award.
Karbownik has made a positive impact in Germany since moving there in August, making 13 appearances for the club and securing four assists, as well as scoring his first ever goal in senior football.
Speaking to club media after his award was presented to him, Karbownik said: “I appreciate this award, I’m grateful […] For me it was a very good time, I got a lot of minutes, played a lot of games, so I’m happy.”
Karbownik was on the cusp of making Poland’s 26-man squad for the World Cup, being included in the 40-man shortlist. Given his good form it was speculated he would be included in the final squad, but Czesław Michniewicz opted for others in the wing-back and central midfield roles instead.
Whether Karbownik will return to Brighton after this loan spell is still up in the air. New boss Roberto De Zerbi may well be willing to give him a chance but it is believed Karbownik is enjoying his time in Germany and could move to Fortuna permanently at the end of his season-long loan. Brighton can expect to recoup all of the £3 million they paid Legia Warszawa for his services in 2020.
