Lewandowski brace, Gikiewicz key and a Piasecki wonder goal: September 16-18th Weekend Round-Up

There were many stand-out performances across Europe over the weekend, so let’s try and sum them all up here.

Serie A

On Friday night, Krzysztof Piątek’s Salernitana lost at home to newly-promoted Lecce. Piątek played 66 minutes before being substituted. Salernitana were the dominant team but often lacked the finishing touch. The same was true of Piątek himself, as he had one particularly good chance which was well-saved by the goalkeeper. Nonetheless he had a well-rounded performance, even if it did lack end product.

Saturday saw a Spezia side containing the Polish trio of Bartłomiej Drągowski, Jakub Kiwior and Arkadiusz Reca record a 2-1 win over Bartosz Bereszyński’s Sampdoria.

Sunday night saw the biggest game of the weekend in Italy as Napoli won 2-1 away at San Siro against AC Milan. Piotr Zieliński played 85 minutes for Napoli, and continued his good form, relieving pressure and picking passes well throughout. Zieliński played well without anything to show for it in his stats after the match.

Ekstraklasa

Friday’s Ekstraklasa games saw two comebacks. Piast Gliwice earned a point against Śląsk Wrocław thanks to a wonderful set-piece delivery by Damian Kądzior, and Legia pulled off a remarkable turnaround against Miedź Leginca. Having gone 2-0 down early on, Filip Mladenovic scored two volleys and recorded an assist to see the home side win 3-2, aided by a red card for dissent for Legnica’s Angelo Henriquez.

Saturday got off to a flying start as Widzew Łódź won 3-0 away to Stal Mielec, and a tense game between Lechia Gdańsk and Jagiellonia Białystok ended 2-2. Fabian Piasecki scored the goal of the season so far as Raków powered to victory over Radomiak Radom, and the evening game saw Cracovia draw 1-1 at home to Pogoń Szczecin.

On Sunday, Górnik Zabrze and Zagłębie Lubin won 2-1 against Korona Kielce and Wisła Płock respectively, before the Poznań derby was a narrow Lech win, 1-0 over Warta.

La Liga

Robert Lewandowski bounced back from his disappointing game midweek as he recorded a brace against Elche. The Poland captain could well have had a hat-trick, but was replaced in the 72nd minute for Ferran Torres.

Eredivisie

There was evidence that the Polish connection at Vitesse was starting to come good. The two loanees, Kacper Kozłowski and Bartosz Białek, combining to rescue a point for Vitesse vs Volendam.

Sebastian Szymański also recovered sufficiently from his hamstring issue to be named on the bench for Feyenoord’s big game against PSV Eindhoven. He was introduced in the 71st minute, as PSV edged out Feyenoord 4-3.

Ligue 1

Przemysław Frankowski and Adam Buksa featured as Nantes and Lens played out a goalless draw. Buksa was introduced in the 65th minute and Frankowski was taken off with ten minutes to go. Łukasz Poręba was named on the bench, but did not get any time on the pitch.

Bundesliga

Rafał Gikiewicz made seven saves against Bayern to help Augsburg to a 1-0 victory over Bayern, including a last second save from opposition keeper Manuel Neuer. Robert Gumny also featured for the victorious home side.
