Grzegorz Krychowiak and Legia have caused quite a stir with the announcement that the veteran midfielder will be training with Legia from the second half of October until the World Cup in order to keep up his fitness levels ahead of going to Qatar.
There was some consternation when Krychowiak went to play for Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia, and given some of the more concerning elements of his play when in the national team, he’s become something of a pariah. It’s not completely undeserved, but that said, he does seem to be a target regardless of his actions nowadays.
The things we can take from this Thursday’s announcement are generally positives. Krychowiak will be maintaining his fitness and given he’s almost certain to start in Qatar due to the lack of available midfielders, it is a very good idea given he would’ve presumably been doing solo gym work had he stayed in Saudi Arabia, where according to Przegląd Sportowy he will spend time as well. At least this way he will have a more varied training regime with one of Poland’s best run clubs.
Noted Polish football journalist and author Ryan Hubbard pointed out on Twitter that it would probably be a good idea for Karol Świderski to do the same as Krychowiak, given Charlotte failed to make the MLS Playoffs. It would make even more sense for Świderski to follow in Krychowiak’s footsteps, given Czesław Michniewicz did make the relatively baffling comment that Świderski’s place in the squad may be at risk if Charlotte didn’t make the playoffs.
Whether Krychowiak will play well at the World Cup is anyone’s guess. In my opinion, he had two good halves of football over the course of Poland’s last two Nations League matches, so that might be reason to believe he is capable of doing a job during the tournament.
