According to a story first published by Dutch outlet 1908.nl, Feyenoord are engaged in discussions with RB Salzburg over a loan with optional purchase for defender Kamil Piątkowski.

The 22 year-old is being courted by the club from Rotterdam as their vice-captain Gernot Trauner has recently had to undergo surgery to his meniscus, and will be out of action for the rest of the season.

Piątkowski has struggled with injuries in Austria during the first half of this season, but a potential move to the Eredivisie will see him playing at a higher level and in the knockout rounds of the Europa League, as well as joining up with countryman Sebastian Szymański who has looked very impressive during his first half-season with Feyenoord.

RB Salzburg signed Piątkowski from Raków Częstochowa two summers ago on a five-year deal for €5 million, and according to Transfermarkt his valuation has remained the same. The story in 1908.nl claims that Feyenoord are looking to add Piątkowski to their squad ahead of the upcoming Klassieker against Ajax on the 22nd of this month, so official confirmation of a deal could still be some days away.

Many fans and pundits alike in Poland hoped that the move to Austria would see Piątkowski kick on and become a real successor in the national team to the ageing Kamil Glik, and things haven’t quite worked out this way. There are promising signs of younger defenders who are beginning to play well at the top level, and Piątkowski will be hoping this move puts him right back in that conversation given he has only made three appearances for the senior Polish side.
