First reported yesterday by Sebastian Staszewski, Bundesliga club Wolfsburg are interested in signing 20 year-old goalkeeper Kacper Tobiasz from Legia Warszawa. Staszewski states that the club’s interest in the young keeper is “very serious”, to the point where Wolfsburg’s goalkeeping coach Pascal Formann travelled to watch Tobiasz play this weekend against Zagłębie Lubin.
It’s been a real breakout season for Tobiasz, coming into Legia’s net and immediately looking like one of their best players in a steady, if not spectacular, season for the club. He was included as a non-playing member of Poland’s World Cup squad and has been linked with a few clubs over the past month. However, as Staszewski points out, Legia have no intention of selling Tobiasz right now as things stand.
It’s quite understandable as to why Legia aren’t looking to sell Tobiasz right now; he’s a promising player and is certainly the best young goalkeeper in the Ekstraklasa, but Legia aren’t blind to reality and know that at some point Tobiasz will be leaving them to play in a top 5 league.
Wolfsburg are an attractive proposition; they’re doing better than expected under Niko Kovac and look well on course to challenge for European football next season. It’s also an attractive destination if you’re Tobiasz, as it has a small enclave of young Polish talent with Jakub Kamiński and Bartosz Białek under contract there, as well as a back-up goalkeeper in Pavao Pervan coming towards the end of his career.
In my opinion, if Wolfsburg come in with a bid of around the €7 million mark in the summer, I expect Legia to take the money and wish Tobiasz all the best with a career in the Bundesliga. It’s worth remembering that Tobiasz would be unlikely to start many games for Wolfsburg whilst Koen Casteels is still at the club, so I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Wolfsburg getting Tobiasz under contract with them any loaning him back to Legia.
