It was announced yesterday evening that Jakub Świerczok would be returning to the Ekstraklasa after signing a deal with Zagłębie Lubin, which sees the 30 year-old striker join until the end of the season with an option for a further year.
This news comes after the decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned Świerczok’s doping ban and cleared him of any wrongdoing following an appeal, with Świerczok having been unable to play for two years since he tested positive for a banned substance following an AFC Champions League match with then-club Nagoya Grampus.
There had been rumours last summer that he would be returning to the Ekstraklasa with Legia Warszawa, but any hopes of this happening were quashed in October when it was announced that Świerczok was to serve a marginally backdated four-year ban for the alleged doping, which he then announced his decision to appeal.
With this successful appeal, Świerczok gets to play regular football at a club where he was arguably at his best, having played for Zagłębie in the 2017/18 season and scoring 16 goals in 21 appearances. It’s also great news for the league as a whole, as it’s another fairly high-profile Polish player coming back to the Ekstraklasa, which can only help out with the league’s visibility.
Understandably, there’s some reticence with the fact that Świerczok hasn’t played in such a long time and will obviously need time to get back up to speed, but when fit you’d have to say he’ll be one of the Ekstraklasa’s premier strikers.
