Jacek Góralski suffers muscle injury; will miss World Cup

Bad news as Polish holding midfielder Jacek Góralski has reportedly suffered a muscle injury that will keep him out of action for between four to six weeks, meaning he will miss the World Cup in Qatar.

Góralski, 30, made Czesław Michniewicz’s 40-man shortlist for the tournament and would have expected to be going to Qatar had he not suffered this injury.

Even though he would likely have been included in the final 26-man squad, he has endured a difficult start to life in the Bundesliga at Bochum. After two injuries to his face in quick succession, he came close to losing his sight in one eye and now plays wearing a corrective lens.

It’s a real shame that Góralski will not be going to the World Cup, as he provides plenty of energy and has a decent eye for a pass (no pun intended). Góralski would’ve been a solid alternative option to Grzegorz Krychowiak or Krystian Bielik in that more defensively minded midfield role.

As it is, this opens the door for a different midfielder to take Góralski’s place in that 26-man squad. I wrote when the shortlist was announced that I personally would be in favour of seeing Kacper Kozłowski at the World Cup, perhaps even at Góralski’s expense.

Whether or not this comes to fruition we will see, as Michniewicz may be minded to make a like-for-like swap with another defensive midfielder.
