In the past week, Poland’s U-17 team beat their Belgian counterparts 5-0, the U-19s won 3-2 against the Czech Republic, and U-17s won again yesterday with a 5-2 scoreline against Sweden.
Considering how often we complain about a lack of entertainment from the senior side, it’s nice to see the younger national teams providing goals and a great spectacle whilst representing Poland. It would be remiss if us to get too excited, but which players should we be most excited about?
Oskar Tomczyk has been scoring for fun in recent games for the U-17 side, including a hat-trick against Belgium. Currently under contract with Lech Poznań and playing for their second team, Tomczyk has been attracting interest from Italian clubs in recent weeks with a view to signing the 17 year-old striker for their development teams. Definitely a striker to keep an eye on, and hopefully his strong goalscoring can continue.
Jan Faberski signed for Ajax last summer, and has produced good performances for the development sides of the Dutch champions. Given their track record of developing great players, it’s proven to be a strong place for Faberski as his performances for Poland’s U-17s have been steadily showing his growing confidence.
Karol Borys might be the most exciting member of the U-17 team, given the talented midfielder is already making several senior appearances for Śląsk Wrocław. Clearly the furthest along in terms of development, Borys is yet to really translate this into being able to dominate games in his age group. This is not to say he is not incredibly influential, but that one might expect more of someone so clearly talented. Nonetheless he is, in my opinion, the player in the U-17s to get most excited about in terms of a real future in senior football.
As for the U-19s who played this week, Maxi Oyedele still looks incredibly impressive despite not yet being the finished article, and Oliwier Zych looks a decent young goalkeeper. However, I was most surprised by striker Alex da Graça Marques, who scored Poland’s second goal. Currently plying his trade with Hamburg’s U-19s, I’m excited to see more from the 17 year-old.
Of course, there is no guarantee that any of these players will make it to the senior side or have successful careers, but I think there is room for a little heady optimism as we see Poland’s development sides put in these impressive results.
