This past weekend saw the start of several top European leagues, as well as the Coppa Italia. There was plenty of Polish representation in these games, so let’s break it down country-by-country.
England
Friday night saw Birmingham loanee Przemysław Płacheta notch his first league goal for the club as the Blues ran out 2-1 winners over Huddersfield Town at St. Andrews. The winger, who has played seven times for the Polish national team, cut inside onto his weaker right foot, with his shot at the near post too powerful for opposition keeper Lee Nicholls.
Saturday saw Matty Cash and Jan Bednarek’s Premier League campaigns get off to a losing start, with Aston Villa and Southampton losing to Bournemouth and Tottenham respectively. However, Mateusz Klich had a solid game off the bench as Leeds beat Wolves 2-1 at Elland Road.
The biggest news on Sunday was the injury suffered by Łukasz Fabiański in West Ham’s loss to Man City. The veteran goalkeeper, who had been having a good opening 20 minutes, collided with both his own teammate Aaron Cresswell and City striker Erling Haaland. Speaking after the match, Hammers boss David Moyes said he felt “not so bad” about the injury, as it was described as simply a bad case of a dead leg. Fabiański himself spoke to Canal+ Sport yesterday to confirm that the doctors spotted a bruise that meant he couldn’t continue. He is expected to resume training at the weekend.
Germany
Rafał Gikiewicz saw four goals put past him as Augsburg fell to Freiburg on Saturday afternoon, and Jakub Kamiński was brought on for the last 20 minutes as Wolfsburg managed to earn themselves a draw at home against Werder Bremen.
Sunday also saw Marcin Kamiński’s Schalke lose 3-1 away at Köln.
France
Mateusz Wieteska had a tough start to Ligue 1 life on Saturday night as Clermont lost 5-0 to PSG, and on Sunday there were a few shaky moments for Marcin Bułka as Nice drew 1-1 with Toulouse.
Przemysław Frankowski notched an assist as Lens narrowly beat Brest 3-2, and on Sunday night Arkadiusz Milik played an hour from the start as Marseille beat Reims 4-1.
Italy
Coppa Italia action meant plenty of time on the pitch for Polish players who play in both Serie A and Serie B. Jakub Kiwior and Arkadiusz Reca played as Spezia beat Como 5-1, with Kiwior playing the whole 90 minutes in the centre of the defence and Reca coming off the bench to get two assists in the last half an hour.
Paweł Dawidowicz was in a defence that saw Verona lose 4-1 to Bari, and on Sunday night young striker Adrian Benedyczak came off the bench to great effect as Parma beat Salernitana, and on Monday night Kamil Glik scored for Benevento against Genoa, although it ultimately proved futile as Genoa won 3-2.
Holland
Sunday afternoon saw new Feyenoord signing Sebastian Szymański get off to a great start to life in the Eredivisie as the team from Rotterdam beat Vitesse 5-2. Szymański had a fantastic and eventful 65 minutes before he was substituted, getting two assists and a booking in the first half.
