Drągowski in advanced talks with Spezia

Goalkeeper Bartłomiej Drągowski is in advanced talks to join Serie A side Spezia, according to reports in the Italian and Polish media.

Drągowski, twice-capped by the national team, is currently at Fiorentina. He has often played the role of back-up goalkeeper for La Viola, and this past season he only made 9 appearances in all competitions. It is understood that Spezia are offering him the chance to be their starting goalkeeper, and this guaranteed time between the sticks is something that Drągowski would require.

He has been looking for a move away from Florence all summer, and the clubs that have shown serious interest have been varied. Drągowski was in talks with Southampton to be their starting goalkeeper, and had agreed personal terms with Espanyol also, but neither club could meet Fiorentina’s asking price.

It remains to be seen whether Spezia will be able to meet Fiorentina’s asking price either, given that both Southampton and Espanyol ended up pulling out of any possible deal due to the required fee being too high for their liking. Something we do know is that Drągowski will be eager to agree on personal terms with Spezia, given that he is desperate for first-team football.

Drągowski, 25, would be a good fit for Spezia in my opinion. Given that they are about to sell their current keeper Ivan Provedel to Lazio, Drągowski will be required straight away in the starting line-up. Furthermore, he will be joining up at Spezia with fellow countryman Arkadiusz Reca.

It is unlikely that Drągowski will be selected for the World Cup this winter, given that Wojciech Szczęsny will be nailed on to start in the tournament barring injury, and there are other goalkeepers ahead of Drągowski in the pecking order.

That being said, there is no reason he can’t perform above expectation and find himself with an outside chance of being selected if this move to Spezia goes through and he consistently performs in the first few months of this season.
