Does Filip Szymczak deserve a chance in the senior squad?

With the approaching European qualifiers, it’s been mooted by many that Fernando Santos may be looking to include some younger players in his first Poland squad. Some of there names being bandied about are fairly obvious, like Michał Skóraś, but I wouldn’t hesitate to give a chance to his Lech Poznań teammate Filip Szymczak.

Szymczak has been one of the more consistently impressive members of Michał Probierz’s U-21 side when called upon this season, and some of his recent performances for Lech showed he is capable of playing with quality and maturity in big games. Not so much yesterday against Śląsk Wrocław but certainly in the huge Conference League tie against Bodo/Glimt.

November saw his best run of form, scoring in consecutive games for Lech in the Ekstraklasa against Korona Kielce and Jagiellonia Białystok, and then for the U-21s against Croatia and Turkey.

Whilst there is debate between Polish pundits whether Szymczak or Szymon Włodarczyk is a better Ekstraklasa forward right now, I would like to see Santos call-up Szymczak on the basis that he can play anywhere across the forward line, and he’s played and impressed at a higher level of competition than Włodarczyk at this point.

Whether or not Arkadiusz Milik will be fit enough for the squad, and whether Santos acknowledges the form of Dawid Kownacki (unlike his predecessor) will have a big part to play whether Szymczak can really challenge for a call-up in the next few weeks.
