Dawid Kownacki is set to leave Düsseldorf in the summer. Where will he go?

It was announced at the start of December that Dawid Kownacki would not be extending his contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf, which expires at the end of the current season.

This struck me as a strange but understandable decision. Kownacki has been playing arguably the best football of his career in Germany prior to the World Cup break, racking up seven goals and seven assists in 19 appearances across all competitions.

Now that Kownacki has made the decision to leave, where will he be playing next season? He had been playing the second half of last season back at his first club Lech Poznań, and despite there being mutual interest in making his loan permanent this past summer, Lech elected to focus on players in other positions.

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany reported that top flight clubs Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz, as well as other unspecified Bundesliga clubs are chasing the 25 year-old striker’s signature on a free next summer. Both named clubs are expecting to lose options at the striker position at the end of this season, so you would assume Kownacki could immediately challenge for first division playing time.

Kownacki was desperately unlucky not to be included in Poland’s 26 man World Cup squad, and perhaps the factor of playing in a higher division and thusly being rewarded with international recognition has been a factor in his decision not to renew his contract.

Hopefully Kownacki can keep his early season form going into the second half of the 2. Bundesliga campaign, and find himself as a good option for Bundesliga clubs going into the 2023/24 season.
