After a stellar World Cup campaign with Poland, Bartosz Bereszyński’s stock has risen to the extent that during the tournament we were already hearing from Di Marzio, as well as Tomasz Włodarczyk, that Roma were interested in bringing Bereszyński to the Stadio Olimpico as a replacement for the out of favour Rick Karsdorp, with the Dutchman told to find a new club by Jose Mourinho before the World Cup on account of poor application against Sassuolo.

Reports in Italy in recent days have emerged citing Napoli as another contender in the race to sign Bereszyński. Napoli are having their best season in recent memory, and currently sit top of the Serie A table as they chase a first Scudetto since 1990.

Sampdoria are unlikely to want to sell, but face the reality that cashing in now might be easier than if they find themselves dealing with a mass exodus if they go down to Serie B, a very real possibility as they are 19th and currently seven points from safety.

Another important distinction to make is that Bereszyński’s playing time and role would differ were he to move to one club over another here; Roma are likely to want to use him as a wing-back, be that on the left or right side (paired with fellow countryman Nicola Zalewski) and likely in the starting line-up. Napoli are offering him a seat on their bench, as a substitute for Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who occupies the right side of a back three in Naples.

As we’ve seen from his strong performances for Poland in Qatar, Bereszyński is capable of playing across the back line, so really you imagine that the choice is down to personal preference on his part. It would be quite something if he were to go to Napoli and win the Serie A title as Sampdoria are relegated, and it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to suggest that is a realistic possibility.

It’s important to remember that this is currently all speculation, but it does seem increasingly likely that Bereszyński will be playing for a new club after January.
