A Poland looking to turn the page under Probierz, for better or worse

There’s been a fair bit of development since the last article discussing Michał Probierz’s initial appointments for his first Poland squad, and I thought now would be the best time to run you through what I think on these matters ahead of tonight’s game against the Faroe Islands.

Firstly, I think first and foremost that some of the personnel chosen are slightly wide of the mark, but nonetheless capable. Replacements from the initial call-up in Marcin Bułka and Bartłomiej Wdowik are richly deserved, even if I think Wdowik wouldn’t have been chosen if he were playing outside of Poland. Secondly, we’re all aware that these fixtures are an absolute must win, which places undue pressure on Probierz that is far from ideal.

It’s for this reason that I believe strong line-ups will be named for both games, and as much as some very inauspicious players have been selected for the wider squad, I don’t think there will be huge surprises in terms of the teams that start against the Faroe Islands and Moldova.

I think the absence of Robert Lewandowski, whilst undoubtedly a huge miss, might well galvanise this set of players to prove to outside observers that they are more than just him. Piotr Zieliński is obviously assuming greater responsibility with the armband, but I think other high profile names like Arek Milik and Matty Cash might prove themselves in this international break.

This has been a very short article, but it’s very hard to articulate the changes that are taking place within the Polish national team at present without mentioning the phrase “must-win”, and it reality everything that happens in the next two games boils down to that.
