It’s perhaps a little early to be speaking about transfers given we’re still over two months away from the opening of the winter window, but such is the nature of modern football that the rumour mill is non-stop when it comes to speculation over the buying and selling of players.
Indeed, in the last few days and weeks we’ve seen credible reports speculating about January moves for three Polish players, all of whom have been having fantastic seasons. I thought it would be prudent to break down these reports and see if the reported destinations would be good fits.
First up, Adrian Benedyczak, who has been having a superb season in Serie B with Parma and will certainly be the subject of further reports in Italy that top-flight clubs are allegedly chasing his signature. The most concrete of these reports suggest that Sassuolo are the most keen on bringing Benedyczak up to Serie A, but the same report suggested that some Bundesliga clubs are keen on his signature as well.
Personally, I see Benedyczak’s future firmly in Italy. Since moving to Parma he has taken time to adapt, but the second half of last season as well as this current campaign have shown he is now coming good. I think were he to take the step up to Serie A it would be a more natural progression for him than trying to adapt all over again in Germany. We saw a few years ago with Krzysztof Piątek how one wrong move to Germany can derail a good period of your career, and I hope Benedyczak would choose more wisely if he has the opportunity to move on from Parma in January.
Karol Świderski has been attracting plenty of admirers for some time now, and whilst it was rumoured he would return to Europe this past summer, he continued to ply his trade with Charlotte in the MLS. Now though, according to numerous reports and quotes from his agent, Świderski is setting his sights on a January move across the Atlantic. As exactly to where however, there has been little concrete information.
In my opinion, Świderski would be a prudent purchase for a number of clubs across the continent, but targeting a club which would still be in European competition come the new year would probably be a realistic ambition. Of course, the second thing which a move for Świderski would rely upon is the fee Charlotte require, which may well be higher than some of his alleged suitors would be willing to pay.
Lastly, Sebastian Szymański has only joined Fenerbahce this summer, but might already be a target for other top clubs this January. According to reports in Turkey, Fenerbahce are hoping to make big profit on Szymański as early as the winter window, and given his electric form are sure to be earning more from his sale than the reported €10 million they paid to Dynamo Moscow.
Indeed, Szymański still being under contract with Dynamo was part of the reason that few clubs were willing to purchase him outright this summer, but that moral quandary has now been taken out of the equation. Various Turkish outlets have linked Szymański with Fiorentina, Napoli and Liverpool in recent weeks, but as far as I see it both Italian clubs named likely do not have the resources to complete a deal for him in January, and Liverpool will be unlikely to add another midfielder to their squad after having bought three new midfielders last summer.
More likely in my view is that a different Premier League club, possibly Brentford or similar, will look to sign Szymański. Brentford have supposedly been interested in his services before, and as we all know Premier League clubs are very hard to turn down, both in terms of the prestige afforded to players and the compensation the selling club receives. I think any possible transfer also depends on how Fenerbahce feel about selling a key part of an as yet undefeated side.
Whether any of these mooted transfers take place is anybody’s guess, and plenty can happen between now and January 1st, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if stories around these three players all pick up even more as we hurtle towards the end of the year.
